Advanced English 9 worries/concerns...

I am certain that there will be several sections of advanced English 9--your classes won't be especially large. You can bet they won't be as small as our cozy little class was last year, though! Our "Power of Eleven" will be spread out amongst several hours--you'll have to spread the good word about how much more you know than everyone else!

Book worries: I am certain that you will be asked to do some sort of analytical writing about your summer reading during the first week or so. Be prepared to discuss your book in class, then write about it independently. I know that if I were the 9th grade English teacher, I'd make you do all of the writing in class. Be prepared for that. YOU ONLY HAVE TO READ ONE of the two books offered.

Please discuss here.

What key points in "They Cage the Animals at Night" would you ask us to write about Mrs. Mammen?

We have to write about something?

Yes, of course Max. I think that we have to write a report on the book we read.

Nice to see you back Max.

Do we need to write this report when school starts, or during the summer? Just making sure, because that would be awkward if, on the first day of school, I didn't have a report ready to give.

[insert nervous laughter here]

Funny Max. Pretty sure the report is to written the first or second day of school.

Why thank you so much! I should probably read that book...

I am sure that your English teacher will conduct a few discussion sessions before she springs a writing assignment on you. I honestly don't know what you will be asked to write about, but it makes sense to me that you would have to write about broad thematic topics. You will most certainly be expected to provide specific examples of character actions and plot points to support your responses. Surely the class discussions will guide you here.

Thanks Mrs. Mammen!

I didn't do very well on my essay. I think that I'm going in on Wed. to talk to Mrs. Barry. I have to hear back from her.
