Hello to All!

Well I saw that Mrs. Mammen said we could start a new post so I decided to give it a try! We need to get everyone on here because we are missing half of our class! Have any of you started your Advanced English reading yet?

I am actually quite surprised with myself in which I actually have started my reading! I'm on like page 75 out of 293. It's pretty good so far...

I still need to obtain said book. My dad said that since he is 38, and reads about 50+ books/year, I need to read an amount proportional to his books to age.

I have been procrastinating when it comes to reading my personal challenge book--the latest translation of the Russian novel War and Peace, which is over 1200 pages long!!!--by reading other books! So far this summer, I've read Ella Minnow Pea, Diary of a Wimpy Kid, The Sweet Potato Queen's Wedding Planner and Divorce guide (hilarious!), Forbidden City, and two other novels whose titles I cannot remember right now. I'm on page 25 of War and Peace, and I'm supposed to have 600 pages read by 11:00 Wednesday morning, which is when the second "class" over the book begins. I think Im skipping it! I decided to cut recipes out of magazines and iron clothes while watching old movies all day today. See--you're not the only people who know how to avoid assignments...

Welcome to the group, Gabe!

Thanks for posting your own question, Shelby, AND for giving Gabe a boost onto the blog!

Halie seems to be the only person reading her assigned book--go ahead and tell us the title.

Oh yes! My book does have a title in which it is, "They Cage The Animals at Night".

I'm currently working on The Complete Sherlock Holmes Volume One, while teaching myself German out of a textbook from '43.

max your humor brightens up my day! :)

WOW! I also have finished my book and reading it now for the second time. Don't ask me to tell you about it, because I won't! It, They Cage the Animals at Night, is just too good. Hey Max, if you become fluent in German, I have some relatives over there. They just called the other day and asked if our farm was affected by the flood in Iowa. It took forever for me to explain to her that we were a whole state and a half away! She does speak English well, though. Is anyone else reading any other books?

I also have relatives over in Germany, however, the only people that know those relatives are my great-grandma's siblings, and only two of them are left (they're parents came over from Germany in about 1911).

Tionna said...

It is questionable when my relatives came over but my great-uncle on my mom's side is a historian an he traced them back to like the 1800s or something. The ones that called were on my dad's side and I don't know who they are either.

I once managed to trace my ancestry back to the 1500s.

Tionna said...

WOW MAX! How long did that take???

Anonymous said...

Well, let me think.............................................................................................................................................................about 2-3 days.

WOW! My mom and I traced our heritage back a while ago. The most interesting thing i found was that a LONG time ago cousins married cousins and that kinda inbread stuff, not too good. But that was a really long time ago.

Anonymous said...

Well, that's slightly weird.

Tionna said...

Do know how ackward it would be to marry my cousin??? It is hard to be around some of them now :)

Can we please drop the subject. I'm sure they have enough of this talk in Alabama.

Tionna said...

True Max. But we're not in Alabama. We're in Kansas!

indeed.

This conversation is cracking me up!

On a related note (ha ha--pun intended), do you remember (oops-I just forgot the kid's name!) in Spellbound when our favorite goofy kid was eliminated from the national spelling bee because he couldn't spell "banns"? Banns are public notices that were usually announced in churches and/or printed in local newspapers about the upcoming marriage of an engaged couple. THe purpose behind this series of announcements--usually repeated weekly over the course of three or four weeks--was so that members of the community could speak up if they knew whether or not the potential bride and groom might be related!

So there ya go!

Mrs. Mammen, you amaze me! How do come up with such detailed definitions? Your knowledge is so vast and thorough! :D

It's always nice to know new words.

Tionna said...

True to that! :) I love using new words that the rest of my family does not know!

I challenge one of you to post a new comment--I'm having a hard time remembering how many posts had been listed each time I check in to the blog. I love the chit chat between you two, Tionna and Max. Make it easier for me to eavesdrop, please!
